Socorro High Athletics had a very busy and successful weekend with 4 teams in action on Saturday and all of them winning The Warrior football team got things off to a good start by defeating district rival Hot Springs by a score of 40-0. The Warriors broke open a close game by scoring two touchdowns and a safety in the last 3:39 of the second quarter to extend a 6-0 lead to 20-0 at the half. The Warriors continued to pour it on in the 3rd quarter with an opening 75 yard touchdown drive followed by two more touchdowns in the quarter to cruise to the 40-0 victory. Senior quarterback Nate Fresquez had 3 touchdown passes to go with 2 rushing scores to lead the Warriors offensively. Duda Jackson had one touchdown reception of 42 yard and Mike McDaniel had a 2 yard touchdown run for the game’s opening score. The Warrior defense was also excellent giving up less that 100 yards in total offense to the Tigers in throwing the shutout. The Warriors were scheduled to play St. Mike’s in Santa Fe on Saturday, but that game has been canceled to COVID issue with St. Mike’s. Instead the Warriors are tentatively scheduled to travel to 6A Las Cruces High School on Friday to take on the Las Cruces High JV team at 3 p.m.

The Socorro Volleyball team won their second match of the season with a win over host Quemado. The Lady Warriors followed up their opening win over with Cuba with another 3 set sweep, with this one much more competitive than the win over Cuba. The Lady Warriors had to go into overtime to win the first set by a score of 27-25 and the second set was also very close with the Lady Warriors by a score of 25-22. In the third set the ladies were able to take a more comfortable 25-16 victory. Senior Marysa Ocampo led the team with 5 aces on 21 serve attempts while junior Taelene Fowler had 11 kills on the day. The Lady Warriors are in action on Monday at home against Mountainair at 5 p.m.

The Lady Warrior Soccer team won their season opener against Silver High by a score of 3-1. The Lady Warriors never trailed in the match, leading 2-0 at the half with each team scoring once in the second half. The Lady Warriors are next in action against Los Alamos for a 3 p.m. match at home.

The Socorro High Boys Soccer team also was in action against Silver on Saturday and picked up win number one in its opener by a score of 5-1. The Warriors led 2-1 at the half and then tallied 3 goals in the second half for the resounding victory. The Warriors will hit the pitch again on Thursday against East Mountain at home at 3 p.m..
