It was a busy weekend for Socorro High School sports with Cross Country, Volleyball, Girls Soccer, and Football all in action. The Warrior football team kicked things off with a Friday afternoon match up at Las Cruces High School with the LCHS JV team. The Warriors had been originally scheduled to play at St. Michael’s in Santa Fe before that game was canceled due to a St. Mike’s player testing positive for COVID-19. The Warriors were coming off a 40-0 opening at home against Hot Springs. In game two the Warriors were expecting a tough test from the 6A JV squad but instead dominated the game from the opening kick. The Warriors received the opening kick and marched 71 yards for the opening score and then proceeded to score touchdowns on 6 of their first 7 possessions, failing to score only on a blocked field goal attempt to end the first half. The Warrior defense was again spectacular and has not given up a score in 8 quarters to begin the season. The Warriors move to 2-0 and will take on district rival Hatch Valley Friday at 7 p.m. at home.

The Lady Warrior Volleyball team continued their outstanding start with a home victory over Magdalena 3-0 on Friday and a 3-2 victory over Bernalillo on Saturday. The Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Steers by scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-17 and extended their season opening streak of sets won without a loss to 15. However, that streak came to a halt on Saturday when Bernalillo took the opening set by a score of 25-21. The Warriors then came back to win set 2 with a 25-12 score. Bernalillo then took set three 25-22 and put the Socorro team in a must win situation in set four. The Lady Warriors elevated their game and rose to the challenge winning set four 25-18 and then took the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-12. The win moves the Lady Warriors to a 6-0 record with an upcoming rematch at Magdalena on Tuesday.
